Around Britten (SIGCD318)

The new CD featuring Britten’s Third Suite, solo works by Tavener and Bryars, and some multi-tracked surprises is out now on Signum Classics and available to buy and download through the links below.

The recording, which took place in Canterbury Cathedral at the end of July 2012, includes the three world-premieres from the tour programme by composers James MacMillan, Dai Fujikura and Norwegian DJ/composer Jan Bang. The iTunes version of the album ‘Around Britten with Matthew Barley‘ is not limited by CD length, so those premieres will be added throughout 2013, along with some other tracks to be recorded this year.

“Barley plays with the micro-instincts of a violinist, shading every phrase with the subtlest of nuances” Sinfini Music, 5 stars

“As always, Barley’s playing is fearless. The disc is a voyage around the cello as well as around Britten, and one that never becomes relentless.”  Gramophone

“Barley, an unclassifiable cellist, builds his anthology around a thoughtful performance of Britten’s Third Suite for cello and the “quietly radiating peace” he finds in it.” The Financial Times

“Barley’s well crafted, multi-tracked cello arrangements of Britten’s folk songs and ‘Concord’ from Gloriana will appeal to many.” BBC Music Magazine
