Matthew Barley/Cellist

Music is the language that permits me to converse with the beyond.

Robert Schumann

Residency at Kings Place

In ten short concerts at Kings Place from September 23rd to 26th, I’ll be doing pretty much everything I can do on a cello! Its one of the most challenging and exciting projects of my year because of the sheer variety of music in four days. And there is a fantastic array of talented guests: Kit Armstrong and Julian Joseph in classical and jazz recitals respectively, as well as programmes with Indian and Sufi musicians, ensemble concerts with the Navarra Quartet, the Matthew Barley Ensemble and Between The Notes, and an adventure into the high-tech world of Motion Capture with video screens and multiple cameras. There will be premieres by Nitin Sawhney, Duncan Bridgeman and MIsha Mullov-Abbado, and lots of improvisations throughout the week in my favourite venue in London.
“Kings Place is a space that audiences will want to visit with its combination of world-class acoustics, free art galleries – and great bacon sandwiches” Guardian
“It stands like a kind of urban island, with Regent’s Canal to one side and Battlebridge Basin to the rear. Looking from the front, you can see greenery, while the water at the back was a pleasant surprise…the building could hardly be more welcoming’” Sunday Times
